Rhys Patchell admits he has endured»a challenging year» ahead of his return to the Wales Test team against Ireland on Saturday.
Scarlets fly-half Patchell last started for his country about the 2018 summer trip to Argentina, when he kicked 20 points as Wales beat the Pumas 30-12 at Santa Fe.
Concussion issues and a torn hamstring combined to interrupt the 26-year-old’s global career, and place his location in Wales’ World Cup squad in query.
But an impressive display off the bench to Ireland at Cardiff last weekend served as a reminder of his caliber.
«It’s been a challenging year, that’s for certain,» Patchell said. «I will not be looking back on it (last year ) too many times.
«It was not the disaster many sockets made it sound like, but it wasn’t the year you’d like moving into a World Cup.
«A couple of concussions were difficult to manage, and tearing a hamstring was not perfect. It stuttered almost any momentum that I tried to pick up throughout this season.
«Game one that I had been concussed, came back, started discovering a little rhythm and got concussed again.
«I arrived back, ripped my hamstring and you’re forever chasing your tail. It is what it is and we are where we are. Thankfully, it’s worked out for the ideal.»
Patchell and Jarrod Evans to the best were still competing to rear up Dan Biggar at Japan Together with Gareth Anscombe ruled with a knee injury, seven days and they all had a closing audition in the Principality Stadium.
It had been Patchell who won the coaches’ votemeaning he avoided a repeat of missing , as he’d done for the 2015 World Cup when he was one of a first contingent cut against Wales’ championship training group that is enlarged.
«He (Evans) dropped me a text after the statement, and I replied,» Patchell added. «This was really good .
«Obviously I felt . I could empathise with himhaving been there myself four years ago.
«It isn’t a simple position to be in. That is sport, a person has to miss out. I felt for all the boys who got text or a telephone call.
«Jarrod and I had been clearly conscious that as a 10 you must do what’s best for your group. You can just deal with what’s facing you.
«I had been talking to friends and family to the Friday night saying’that is it, we’ll see how it goes’.
«It is difficult, trying to be as excellent as possible on the day. If the cards fall the way, great. That is how it goes, if they don’t.
«The attention was being as great as I would be for your team, attempting to drive the team around the park and get us into great rankings and get our silhouette going. Luckily, the coaches liked what they found, I assume.»
