Wales fly-half Rhys Patchell upbeat after ‘challenging year’

Rhys Patchell admits he’s suffered»a challenging year» before his return to the Wales Test team against Ireland on Saturday.
Scarlets fly-half Patchell final began for his nation on the 2018 summer tour to Argentina, when he kicked 20 points as Wales beat the Pumas 30-12 in Santa Fe.
A torn hamstring and concussion problems subsequently united to disrupt the 26-year-old’s global career, and place his place in Wales’ World Cup team in question.
However an impressive show off the bench during a 22-17 loss to Ireland last weekend served as a reminder of his caliber.
«It’s been a difficult year, that is for certain,» Patchell explained. «I won’t be looking back on it (last year ) a lot of times.
«It was not the disaster many outlets made it sound like, but it was not the year you would like going into a World Cup.
«A few concussions were hard to manage, and tearing a hamstring wasn’t ideal. It stuttered any momentum I tried to pick up throughout this season.
«Game one I had been concussed, came back, began finding a little rhythm and got concussed back again.
«I came back, tore my hamstring and you are forever chasing your tail. It’s exactly what it is where we are, and we are now. Fortunately, it has worked out for the best.»
Patchell was still competing to rear up Dan Biggar in Japan Together with Gareth Anscombe ruled with a knee injury, seven days back and they all had a closing marvel at the Principality Stadium.
It was Patchell who won the coaches’ vote as he’d done for the 2015 World Cup when he was one of a first recognized cut against Wales’ championship training squad that is extended.
«He (Evans) dropped me a text after the statement, and I answered,» Patchell added. «That was really good .
«Of course I felt for him. I could totally empathise with himhaving been there myself four decades ago.
«It is not an easy position to maintain. That’s game, somebody has to miss out. I sensed for all nine of the boys that got a phone call or text.
«Jarrod and I were distinctly conscious that since a 10 you have to do what’s best for your team. You may just deal with what’s facing you.
«I had been talking to friends and family on the Friday night stating’this is it, we’ll see how it goes’.
«It is hard, trying to be as fantastic as possible on the day. When the cards fall the way, good. That is how it goes When they don’t.
«The attention was as good as I would be for your team, attempting to push the team around the park and put us into good rankings and receive our silhouette moving. Thankfully, the coaches liked what they saw, I assume.»
