After Kim Clijsters declared her return to tennis we look at other sporting comebacks that are great.
Has resigned from the game twice, originally retiring in 2007 due to persistent injury issues.
In 2009, Clijsters returned to act Observing the arrival of her daughter along with a yearlong hiatus, relying on wildcards to recover her position. The US Open title she had won in 2005 was recovered by the Belgian.
The next calendar year prior to adding an Open success for her CV clijsters successfully defended the title in 2010. Another retirement has been announced in 2012, this time as Clijsters didn’t wish to carry on to tour while her daughter began college, because of family responsibilities.
Clijsters began training and has announced her return.
Clijsters isn’t the first superstar to produce a sporting comeback…
Widely considered the best player of all time of the NBA, Jordan wrapped his sneakers in 1993 to offer a go to league baseball. However then he returned two decades later to pick up where he left off. He also led the Bulls to three consecutive titles between 1996 and 1998. His next comeback with the Washington Wizards in 2001 did not prove as successful. Jordan and his final NBA game played on April 16, 2003.
Jockey Piggott declared his retirement in 1985 having ridden over 4,000 winners. The winner was jailed a couple of years after for tax fraud, however, returned to racing in fashion in 1990 because he won the Breeders’ Cup Mile on Royal Academy. Piggott rode Rodrigo de Triano in the 2,000 Guineas in 1992 to victory.
Foreman became world champion for the first time in 1973, stopping Joe Frazier in two rounds. Following two successful title defences, Foreman dropped to Muhammad Ali from the struggle called’The Rumble in the Jungle’ a year later and failed to regain his belt before announcing his retirement in 1977. Fast forward to 1994 and Foreman, who was in the ring as 1987, became the oldest heavyweight champion in history since he floored Michael Moorer in the 10th round.
Seles won eight Grand Slam singles titles before her birthday and became the youngest woman to reach the entire world No 1 position in 1991. Yugoslavian-born Seles dominated the game winning three of four Grand Slam singles titles in 1992 with successes in the Australian, French and US Open. Seles was stabbed by a male spectator while playing at a tournament in Hamburg. She wouldn’t play for a couple of decades although she recovered from her injuries. She returned in 1995, and she won her 10th and last major singles title with a psychological victory at the Australian Open.
Austrian Formula One driver Lauda returned after suffering burns in a crash in the German Grand Prix at 1976 into racing 42 days. Before retiring from the game in 1979 he claimed a second domain from 1977 with Ferrari. Lauda won his third race back returned with McLaren three decades afterwards and captured his world title. He passed away at the age of 70.
Once he won the 2019 Experts woods ended an 11-year wait. Back in April 2017, he informed Jack Nicklaus»I am done» during the Champions Dinner at Augusta National, and he flew directly to London to find the adviser who suggested that he undergo spinal fusion surgery. And two decades after his surgery, he was being fitted for a different green jacket as he was moved by his fifth inmates victory to 15 titles – three supporting Nicklaus.
